Why don’t you start your own fragrance brand? You have a cult following, it could be a breath of fresh air compared to the current barrage of completely forgettable brands.

Hello dear friends! I can't believe I've been following you guys for 15 years already. Hoping you can please help me out - I've spent hours on all reference sites but still came up empty.

I fell in love with Lutens' Gris Clair when I was in my 20s. I wore it myself, I bought it for every man I knew. I always had it - when my collection was huge, when it dwindled, when I moved to the US and the moving company returned the box with all of my perfumes (my dad is using them back home in Moscow which makes me really happy to think about). I survived the reformulation and I was still fine. It became the only fragrance I use daily - after shower and before bed. And then they discontinued it altogether.

I'm hoping you can help me fill a Gris Clair hole in my life. Important note: it's not necessarily lavender I'm after, it's the hot stone/ hot iron feeling and the dry down. If you would be able to give me anything on it I'll be so so happy!

Greetings from NYC, Natasha

You were really influential to me with the two 2008 and 2018 books. One of the reasons I think was the stars ratings,I probably can name most of your four and five stars reviews.Would be great if you dicide to do this again :))

I think you and Tania are underestimating the magic of stars and also dollar ratings; together these two things form an ineffable part of the magic of 2008. Perhaps it shouldn't be, but it is.

What is the state of the vibration theory? Are you still actively working on it?

Hello Luca and Tania, with all the regulations that have been implemented around ingredients a lot new formulations of old perfumes don't smell like they used to, but do you think there are any that still smell as fantastic as they did when they first came out?

Jamal's avatar

In most cases regulations are not the issue but cost :)

What fragrances are you both currently wearing? Do you wear fragrances on a daily basis, rather infrequently or maybe just for testing purposes?

Who are some of your favorite self-taught perfumers and why?

Top Lists are great! Could you present a Favourites List? (Like top five of neroli, or the 10 best

Classics that are still available and great)

You’ve lived in lots of different places and appear to have a strong international outlook but is there a place that’s dear to both your hearts? And as a follow up (if I may) I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the differences of how perfume is generally perceived in these places .

I would be interested in your opinions on the Diptyque: Les Essences and the new Dries Van Noten fragrances if you get a chance to sample them.

On a separate note, I absolutely loved your first joint Substack video critique and eagerly await the next.

Also thank you both for your vital contributions (past, present and future) in educating the world about fragrance / scent.

What's the best tuberose perfume you have ever smelled?

Hello Luca and Tania, I'd love to hear a discussion about masculine/feminine scents. Whether the distinction is relevant at all, if so when and why. Thanks!

Luca has such an in-depth knowledge of classical music, is there any non-classical you're a fan of (jazz, ect)

Romana's avatar

Hi Tania et Luca!

Easy question: are any "classic" mainstream brands worth it nowadays?

I know it's not easy to sum up an entire brand with Luca's curt "meh!", because not all fragrances are bad or good... so what's your opinion on the current creations of the"good old boys"?

I mean brands like YSL, Estée Lauder, Guerlain, Dior, Chanel, Lancome, let's say Mugler, Cacharel, Gucci, Jil Sander, Cartier...

Have a nice days!

Times change so do people, remember when my grandmother or my father loved their perfumes and wore them forever hardly changing their signature fragrances. Now with this hype about niche parfumerie and with so many releases each year (and good ones as well) it seems particularly complicated to be faithful to just one or two of them. I mean somehow before parfum use to define our personalities, so you were recognizable by your scent. Now it seems another issue, context is different. And perhaps among all these new releases we look, romantically, for our perfect match (by the way you seem to me a perfect match). This lead us to a search which might be never ending... and wonder if you both have your own signature parfum, the one you always go back even you love and have so many... (I know Luca you love Miyako but is this one the one?)

Talking about great perfumes, Hiram Green is so good, and would love to know which ones are your other favourites besides Philtre. Moon Bloom? Tryts? Hyde? Arbolé?

Thanks dears!

ps. hope you can give is one day your opinion about Dries Van Noten collection (I know there is this big Spanish company behind Puig but I´m curious about what do you both have to say, and I know after watching the recent video that Tania would be disappointed as they released quite a large collection of perfumes and eau de toilette, I agreed with her: a short collection and very good one instead is the best)
