I always get a thrill when entering Liberty’s, because the Arts and Crafts architecture and decoration of the place cast such an immediate spell that I’m never sure I’ll be able to make it back to daylight. There is something about Liberty style that puts me in a good mood. The place seems to have a guardian angel that makes sure there is always something on offer that is weirder and more beautiful than you expected. I remember having a come-to-Issey moment there thirty years ago when I tried on a Miyake jacket that happened to be exactly my size and shape.
Someone recently told me that they had a new perfume floor in the basement. This required a visit. It was a quiet morning, and we were the only customers. The place is reached via a beautiful wood-panelled elevator and is ample and staffed by people who really know their stuff. The new breed of perfume enthusiast found at most niche counters these days is a joy to talk to. One of them kindly showed me around from brand to brand, pointing out the stuff I should be smelling. There was not enough time to smell everything, but I did find some gems.
