Reading you has been one of the very good things of the year that’s leaving us. Count me in, as usual, and: my best wishes ✨ to your family, to Tania and to you, dear maestro, dear Luca.
My English is not good enough to know the other meanings of the word "shit". Just one. So now I'm afraid what to think about ambergris... my mother must never find out!
"The idea is to create a volume without asperities, with every material invisibly joined to its neighbors and sanded down until the nose feels no corners." Love this description—I feel like this is often missing in contemporary perfumery; the goal seems to be to create something where one can pick out all the individual notes like one of those "find the hidden object" puzzles rather than creating a cohesive olfactive whole that transforms into a scent that is entirely new.
I adore Amouage Gold. It’s my favourite scent out of the 6 Amouage fragrances that I own (for now!).
All perfume evokes a song for me but, when I wear Amouage Gold, I have Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” playing in my head and I find myself humming the song. Probably a cliche, but I feel invulnerable when I wear it. Would love to win a decant in this raffle, to wear vintage Gold but once…one would feel absolutely invincible!
"Bada Santuzza, ha fatto la puzza", as my dad used to sing around the apartment when he was in a light hearted, flippant mood. Obviously Santuzza was not wearing Amouage Gold Woman.
Best wishes to you, Tania and Fiamma for 2025 Luca.
Brilliant. Thank you. (Also, shaking my head that I didn’t realize until now that ‘pulling out the stops’ was an organ reference. I’ve had the chance of seeing several magnificent organ pieces played on Western Canada’s largest organ this year, including one that required multiple organists, and now I’ll think of this when I hear that expression.)
There is a debate: ambergris is either shitted by a spermwhale or excreted by its mouth. Anyway it has to float for a very long time to acquire its delicious smell. I once saw a big block in Taiz museum ( Ye men )
I will immediately leave the house to try it before the year ends. I love the felling of connection you help us all to create between your words, our noses and spirits. 🫶🏼 Always wonderful reading you. All the best for you and your family in 2025.
Aldehydic writing! Lit from within, buoyant, funny, full of charm!

Thank you Paola! Best wishes to you too.

Conductorial stylings of Karajan in a bottle?
A terrifying thing to imagine; all strings, no winds. Like a perfume with no top notes!
😂
Whenever I read one of your notes my day is brighter, more interesting and infinitely more sophisticated. Thank you.

Yes, please. I love your writing and it sticks in my brain like certain scents.

Love the old tacky/fancy amouage bottle: Arabs are the best at achieving the perfect balance between the two. Wish they still made those.
Also love the center of gravity/ aldehydes metaphor: beautifully put
Thank you for that piece. I will remove the moo from my future pronunciations of this house

Haven’t had a chance to try this one, would love to.
Your Substack helped to keep my spirits up this difficult year, thank you.
Happy New Year to you and your family!
Thank you!
