Why, oh why, do the big boys buy something that is loved for its purity of spirit and purpose, and then rip the heart out? I just don’t get it. So counter-intuitive. But if you can get hold of some Nostrano, made in Venice by Luca of Alle Testiere (et al) you can taste the lagoon amongst the herby bitters.
My version of Negroni Sbagliato is to swap the Martini Rosso for Fernet Branca. Not as legendary as the Lavorato but great.
Another depressing change in the Galleria was the closing of the State Cartography shop next to the Bar Zucca. I used to spend hours upstairs looking at geological maps covering the whole of Italy choosing which one to work on for my exams. Now I think it’s another luxury goods shop 🙁.
Always found that kind of approach to brand management sort of primitive (and that's coming from a brand strategist). Like insisting one's wife must be a virgin and believing she's never has and never will fancy other men. How would that hurt their brand if they welcome other brands in, honour history, preserve tradition? They could even make friends and learn something from their wife's previous lovers and outsmart them. She's chosen you in the end, hasn't she? What they did only makes them look petty and the Campari brand stiff, artificial, over-regulated and weak. Either continue with the original recipe and flaunt it or drop it altogether. The friends will talk anyway (bartenders in that case). I don't drink wine nor vodka (had my share), Campari tonic is my only drink for whatever the season. I have zero associations with it formed from ads as there were none here when I was growing up. But someone in the UK has recently told me it's got a very dated, pretentious 70/80s image (I don't care, I can drink it by bucketful, the only drink I always have at home). So it seems they were never able to resurrect the brand, the recent campaigns were lame, now there's their own Aperol offensive (which I hate because of it beer top not) canibalizing Campari and another offensive from Select (very nice label design). Campari is on sale in a dusty huge bottles in airport duty free. Might need to stock up. That's a good story here https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/jul/26/spritz-up-your-life-venetian-aperitif-drink-summer

I didn't know you were a Negroni lover Luca. Bitter orange lovers unite!
I've never been to Italy but your description of the bar made me ache with envy.
That's so sad that the new owners would destroy something that made this bar so special. Typical of big corporations, unfortunately. Sigh!
Fry? The residents of Ptolomaea, the division of circle 9 who were traitors to their guests, were encased in ice!
Oh my. It took me a few moments to realize you hadn’t written Lavatorio Secco.

And now I grieve for something that I will never experience.
