There’s a reason why I prefer to listen to a Taraf de Haïdouks album than to Liszt’s renditions of Hungarian folk songs. Love the analogy for perfumery! I think that it applies to other areas of culture, too.

Also, this reminds me. In the mid 90s, I had many perfumes. My then boyfriend's favorite? The inexpensive drugstore scent - Coty Wild Musk!

Did you just condemn a vast chunk of the Romantic catalogue to the bargain bins of 2nd hand vinyl emporiums everywhere?! Also, I don't know what a "Claire's" is but am now curious to find out sharpish!

I love a good cheapie! This sounds like the perfect cherry perfume, simple, and made for young girls.

I'll have to stop by Claire's and pick up a bottle. Not for me, but for my daughter, of course, ha!

Love to hear about good cheapies! I guess Lambert didn't care for Bruckner but I do!

I know! It's one of the things that struck me like electricity when first reading 2008.

By the way, do you happen to know where Nikolaus Harnoncourt wrote about Bruckner? I keep seeing him quoted and it’s always very interesting, but I’ve never found the source.

It might be in the extensive notes to one of his Bruckner recordings? (3rd?) I have loved Harnoncourt in the remote past in say Vivaldi but I find him laboured in his later conducting. I'm very sentimental at heart so I like Knappertsbusch best, still, in that music. The most embarrassing thing I ever saw was Bernstein conducting the 7th with the VPO when the orchestra simply didn't pay any attention to him at all but went their own way, acceptably but hardly with inspiration. Karajan was marvellous not least in the way he entered the hall, carried by a large tall man who gripped him around his chest and deposited on the podium where if I remember he remained standing until it was time to be carried off again. Needless to say it was an emotional evening.

I will see if I have those notes by Harnoncourt.

A must have. Rumour has it I was named after a turse ten day tangle with labels - and a box of Cherry liqueurs and that my father had expected 'ie' in lieu of the 'y' - but my mother knew better. If it's not too sweet of course. I like to sour my people pleasing persona.

Totally agree, except for Habanita. I actually like the Habanita L'Esprit flanker a lot! Will pop into Claire's asap too.
