Zoologist is doing some great stuff, particularly considering the challenge of maintaining their high output of perfumes. Some are misses, sure, but many are great. Nightingale is one of my favorites. The original Beaver was much better than the new “Maple Edition,” which, from your description, the latter sounds like the one you tried? At least they didn’t try to hide the fact that it had been reformulated to a completely different perfume. Squid, Sloth, Bee, and King Cobra are also great. I bought several samples of some others a while ago that are in my test lineup. I should’ve waited for Olm and Orchid Mantis, darn it.

Here's hoping the interviewee asks for the boss' phone number on the way out.

I think you give perfumers too much credit sometimes :) If you smell iris, it's not out of the question there is at least an ionone in there, and certainly there is no one to one mapping between notes listed and the formula.

Well your columns have inspired lots of sample purchases lately, happy to be rediscovering Zoologist! Also, was in Santa Fe and experienced a serious reduction in fragrance perception as you wrote about in another article, was using way more than one spritz from some Amouage samples...

Such fantastic writing. I’m so glad I stumbled upon the ability to subscribe to these posts. A gift that keeps on giving for sure. I’ll be looking forward to trying Orchid Mantis in the near future! Moth is one of the full bottles I’ve purchased from Zoologist and it makes its shadowy, lurking, dusty antiques attic, ambery appearance around Halloween every year. Thank you!

Yes languid, but I was looking for something denoting less of a desire to please, what the French call quant-à-soi (self-possessed), etc.
